A tattoo is a very personal thing. It’s not like buying clothing, which, if you don’t like, you can return. A tattoo is forever, and even though people will tell you that you can always have a tattoo removed if you don’t like it, or that you can have your tattoo inked over, these are not always good ideas. You need to think about a tattoo as something permanent, instead of thinking of it like something that can be gotten rid of easily. That being said, one of the best ways to ensure that you get a tattoo that you’ll love is to design your own tattoo.
Going about designing your own tattoo is not a difficult thing. First, you need to realize that even if you’re not an artist, you can design your own tattoo. While it would be helpful if you were an artist, you don’t necessarily have to be one. When we talk about designing your own tattoo, what we mean is figuring out what you want to have in very specific detail.
For instance, say you want to have something tattooed on yourself to remind you of your best friend. First, you should figure out what types of things remind you of that friend. Did you play sports together or did you both love some of the same types of things? Once you’ve figured that out, refine that idea. If you both like music, for instance, start thinking about if there is a favorite lyric that you both loved, or if a generic music note is enough. Then speak with your tattoo artist about what you’d like to have. They can do the drawing while you explain. This way you’ve designed your own tattoo, and you know it will be something you’ll cherish forever.
